A very nice book by Robert C. Martin about producing well readable and maintainable code and software. The book is available in the DESY Library.
The language used for the examples in the book is Java. However, one can quite easily transfer its concepts to other languages, like C++ and even the standardized languages for Programmable Logic Controls (PLCs).
