Getting Started
- This part of the FLC Wiki is supposed to give you an overview of a couple of peculiarities of the DESY computing environment in general and the FLC computing environment in particular. It is aimed towards newcomers in the first place, but you may also find something interesting if you have already been working in FLC for some time. The text assumes that you have a basic knowledge of some computing terms and that you have worked with a Unix-like operating system before.
If you are new to DESY, you may want to have a look at “The First Three Days at DESY Hamburg” (PDF) to get started. You can also get a hardcopy of that leaflet from the UCO info wall (building 2b, ground floor, opposite the UCO glass hut). Furthermore the UCO provides a lot of on-line documentation on various issues, as well as hardcopies of user manuals for some frequently-used software. The IT group offers a detailed description of IT services.
To get a DESY computer account, go and see Ties, who can create the account for you. He will afterwards print out a paper copy of the completed registration form which has to be signed manually and dropped in the UCO mailbox (building 2b, ground floor, on the corner of the glass hut). The new account will have a temporary password which you should change as soon as possible (in the Registry), since it will only be valid for a few days.
